“Bucks for the Barn”

4-H and FFA students are pitching in to help build the new “Big Barn” at the Merced County Fairgrounds.

The $2 million project will replace the dilapidated hog and sheep barns in the fairgrounds’ livestock area. The idea is to have the young people who use the barn help raise the money to build it.

Each Merced County 4-H and FFA group will send ambassadors to a dessert reception April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Merced County Fairgrounds. The ambassadors will learn about the barn fundraising project and pick up donation containers to hand out to their members. The goal is to get family and friends to put their spare “bucks” and change in the donation containers in April and May. The donations will be returned to the fairgrounds the week of May 17-21. Prizes will be awarded to the 4-H and FFA clubs and individuals who collect the most money.

Erecting the barn is one of the goals of The Friends of the Fair, Inc., a 501(c)3 not-for-profit formed in 2008 to make improvements at the Merced County Fairgrounds. In addition to the current “Bucks for the Barn” fundraiser, Friends is helping finance beautification and long-term development of the Merced County Fair with membership fees, charitable donations, grants and other fundraisers. Assembly Center Memorial Dedicated

Sixty eight years after they were forced to leave their homes and sent to the Merced Assembly Center at the Merced County Fairgrounds, 150 internees of Japanese ancestry returned to the fairgrounds to celebrate the dedication of the Merced Assembly Center Memorial.

Behind the sculpture is a wall containing most of the names of the 4,669 Japanese Americans who were sent to the Assembly Center from Merced County and other Northern California communities during the summer of 1942. [View dedication photos and story]

Merced County Fair is moving to June!

The 119th fair is scheduled for June 15-20, 2010, the third week in June. For years, the Merced County Fair has been held in July but the fair is now planned one month earlier. The change is necessary because the California State Fair in Sacramento, which has traditionally been in late August through Labor Day, is expected to be moved up to July, said Thomas D. “Tom” Musser, the Merced County Fair CEO.
